SymbiticA at Dublin Ireland

SymbioticA and Science Gallery, Dublin begin a new experiment in January 2011 when science and art collide in Visceral: The Living Art Experiment.

VISCERAL will confront audiences with the delicate processes of modern biology to explore our changing understandings and perceptions of life in the light of rapid developments in the life sciences and their applied technologies. A range of award-winning work from 17 different artists will challenge visitors to consider the tension between art and science and the cultural, economic and ethical implications of biosciences today.

The exhibition will explore and provoke questions about scientific truths, what constitutes living and the ethical and artistic implications of life manipulation. The exhibition also marks ten years of intensive and challenging work carried out at SymbioticA.

Curated by SymbioticA’s Director Oron Catts and SymbioticA’s leading researcher Dr Ionat Zurr, Viseral will bring together more than a decade of work developed through SymbioticA’s art-science residency program at The University of Western Australia.

Works in the exhibition will include ‘Midas’ by Paul Thomas, which examines the space where skin and gold meet; ‘Silent Barrage’ by Neurotica, an architectural scale arrangement of pole robots that stimulate neuronal activity of cells and provoke epilepsy in a culture dish in response to audience movements; ‘The Vision Splendid’ by Alicia King, an installation of cultured tissue within an artist-designed bioreactor and The Tissue Culture and Art Project’s ‘Semi-Living Worry Dolls’ offer absolution through whispering your troubles to bioengineered worry dolls. The exhibition will also include the unique ‘Lab Out of Context’, where artists and scientists will create new work and research in view of Science Gallery audiences.

Bumper crop of links

After attending the Full Steam Ahead meeting at Art Expression Gallery this week, we have a bumper crop of new links to share.

One of discussion points was the definition of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). We now see it more clearly as a placeholder for the idea of interdisciplinary combinations of art and science. That goes under many names and John Eger tackles another in this article for the Huffington Post.

Edward Abeyta, director of Student and Client Services at UCSD has a team working to compile a resource called Steam Manifesto similar to this one and it is worth checking out and following.

Here is some interesting statistics on how the Arts in STEM contributes to the economy.

Dr. Francis X. Kane is quoted here, "Of the two million U.S. Arts jobs requiring significant technology proficiency: 10% are architects; 11% are fine artists, art directors and animators; 7% are producers and directors; and 7% are photographers. The products of these disciplines represent 6.4% of the U.S. economy and over $126 billion annually in revenue from foreign trade." In this same article he mentions TEAM-STEM. SDVAN presented a special tour of Synthesis: Processing and Collaboration including Virtual Reality installation for the StarCAVE with special guest Tom DeFanti, Director of Visualization and Senior Research Scientist at Calit2. Trish Stone was our tour Director and is the Gallery Coordinator at Atchinson Hall,. UCSD. Kira Carrillo Corser took a group photo of us all while we were there along with some wonderful images.

Visions of Science Go Viral

See the International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge, jointly sponsored by the journal Science and the National Science Foundation. The visualization contest, currently in its eighth year, recognizes scientists and artists who use visual media to promote understanding of scientific research.
